Why you should move to Ljubljana?

We’ve all been there. Not in Ljubljana, but on that magical high caused by the excitement of travel that makes us say: “I could totally live here”, as the new city seduces us with the promise of new flavours, smells and inhabitants. With years, you learn to resist the urge and grow to appreciate travel for what it is – a sweet platonic relationship, short-term romantic affair that wasn’t meant to be put to test of harsh realities, in this case the bureaucratic & cultural difficulties of starting life anew at a destination that only yesterday seemed so unquestionably perfect. Ljubljana, however, keeps climbing the lists of best places to live in as it extends its welcoming embrace to a growing number of expats. As an expat myself, enamoured with its ...

KAVALIR: GETTING AROUND THE CITY CENTRE BY ELECTRIC CAR

Ljubljana’s electric-powered vehicles referred to as Kavalirs (Gentle Helpers) are a free city centre public transport option friendly both to people and the environment. Kavalirs, mainly intended for the transport of the elderly, mobility-impaired people, and visitors, run around the pedestrianized historical city centre at a speed slow enough to allow you to hail them anywhere on the street. Telephone ordering is also an option. The Kavalir fleet currently consists of four vehicles, two of them open-sided and two glazed and heated in winter time. Friendly Kavalir drivers will take you anywhere within the city centre pedestrian zone. The vehicles, moving at a speed of up to 25 kilometres per hour, can carry five passengers. The two open-sided ‘summer Kavalirs’ run in the...

LJUBLJANA’S GREEN ACHIEVEMENTS

The decision to name Ljubljana the European Green Capital 2016 was based on the fact that of all the nominees, Ljubljana had made the largest number of changes in the direction of environmentally-friendly and sustainable development in the shortest period of time, precisely from 2007, when the Vision 2025 sustainability strategy was adopted, to 2014. The city’s traffic policy encourages sustainable mobility solutions. 2012 saw the closing of the core city centre area for motorized vehicles. Urban cycling is rapidly increasing in popularity and the city’s cyclists thoroughly enjoy using the free BicikeLJ bike sharing network. More and more public city buses in Ljubljana are fuelled by methane in order to achieve reduction in CO2 emissions. Electric-powered vehicles called Kavali...

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia

Ljubljana is the capital of a state, but it is small and pretty, easy to get around, and full of surprises. While during winter it is its dreamy central European character that prevails, during summer it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel to it. It is remarkable for its rich tradition, youthful vibrancy, cultural creativity, feel for entertainment, and numerous green spaces. Uniqueness wherever you turn Ljubljana has preserved evidence of all the five millennia of its history, including, among others, the remains of the Roman city of Emona and the old city centre with its medieval castle and beautiful buildings with Baroque façades, decorative portals and uneven roofs. Other significant bits in the mosaic of Ljubljana are its picturesque bridges across the river Ljubljanica and its vast Tivo...

Top Things to do in Winter

We’ll be honest and say we much prefer the long, hot days of summer to the months when we’re wrapped in many layers and seeing darkness at what feels like mid-day. That said, this year we’re determined to make the most of the winter months, so we’re sure to hit March feeling good. Happy December For a start, we’ll make full use of Happy December (Veseli December), going downtown to see the lights and get something warm to eat and drink from the stalls. People travel for miles to enjoy the scenes here, and a bag of chestnuts and cup of mulled wine while walking around, or sitting under a blanket at a café, is one of the real treats of the season. One thing to be careful of: ordering hot chocolate (vroča čokoláda) will get you a cup of hot, chocolate pudding, so go for cocoa if that’s what y...
